CHADDLEWORTH, a parish in the hundred of KINTBURY-EAGLE, county of BERKS, 6§ miles (W.S.W.) from East Ilsley, containing, with the tything of Woolley, 448 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £9. 4. 7., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. In 1720, a school was founded and endowed in this place, by Mr. William Saunders, for the education of eight poor boys, who are also clothed and apprenticed, of which number, two belong to Chaddleworth; the income is £40 per annum. Mrs. Susannah Wynne gave also an annuity of £ 10 for teaching ten poor children of this parish. In 1160, a priory was founded for regular canons of the order of St. Augustine, which was dissolved by Wolsey, at which period the revenue amounted to £71. 10. 7.
