CHALFIELD (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of BRADFORD, county of WILTS, 3 miles (W.) from Melksham, containing, with the extra-parochial liberty of Little-Chalfield-and-Cottles, 100 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £6, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Sir H. B. Neale, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine.
