CHARLTON-ADAM, a parish in the hundred of SOMERTON, county of SOMERSET, 3 miles (E.) from Somerton, containing 377 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £6. 14. 7v endowed with £200 private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £.300 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of H. P. Collins, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. A chantry, or free chapel, dedicated to St. Stephen, was anciently founded here by Lord Henry Fitz-Richard, by permission of the prior of Brewton, under whom he held the manor. The old Roman Fosse-way from Bath to Ilchester proceeds through this parish.
