CHARLTON-MACKREL, a parish in the hundred of SOMERTON, county of SOMERSET, 3 miles (E.) from Somerton, containing 309 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £ 16.0.2., and in the patronage of the Rev. W. P. Brymer. The church, dedicated to St. Martin, is a handsome edifice in the ancient style of English architecture, repaired and embellished at the expense of the present incumbent. This parish is bounded on the south by the river Gary, across which there is a bridge of two arches, on the line of a modern road that passes along the course of the old Roman Fosse-way.
