CHERITON, a parish in the hundred of FAWLEY, Fawley division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 2§ miles (S. by W.) from New Alresford, containing, with the tything of Beaworth, 599 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacies of Kilmeston and Titchbourn annexed, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the incumbent, rated in the king's books at £66. 2.6., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. A battle was fought here in the reign of Charles I., called Alresford fight. The parish is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount. Twenty poor children are instructed by a schoolmistress, for £12 per annum, the produce of a bequest by the Rev. Morgan Jones.
