CHETTLE, a parish in the hundred of MONCKTON up WIMBORNE, Shaston (East) division of the county of DORSET, 7 miles (N. B.) from Blandford-Forum, containing 132 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Dorset, and diocese of Bristol, rated in the king's books at £8. 2. 9., and in the patronage of the Lord of the Manor. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is partly in the early and partly in the later style of English architecture. Here is a fine old mansion, built in Sir JohnVanbrugh's style, but it is unoccupied.
