CHILTINGTON (WEST), a parish partly in the eastern division of the hundred of EASWRITH, rape of BRAMBER, but chiefly in the western division of the same hundred, rape of ARUNDEL, county of SUSSEX, 8£ miles (N. W. by N.) from Steyning, containing 638 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £12. 16. 10., and in the patronage of the Earl of Abergavenny. The church is a neat structure in the early style of English architecture, with a spire. A charity, school was founded, in 1634, by William Smyth, with' an endowment, since vested in land producing £47 per annum, for which fifty children are taught. In the higher parts of the parish some curious circular nodules of blue limestone are found, imbedded in the steep banks of clay overhanging the road.
