CHIPPING, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of BLACKBURN, county palatine of LANCASTER comprising the townships of Chipping, and Thornley with Wheatley, and containing 1735 inhabitants, of which number, 1229 are in the township of Chipping, 9 miles (W. by N.) from Clitheroe. The living "is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated in the king's books at £36. 13. 4., endowed with £400 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Chester, as impropriator of the rectory, which is rated at £24. 16. 5. The church is dedicated to St. Bartholomew. This pa- rish contains limestone, a considerable quantity of which is burned in the neighbourhood. Fairs for cattle are held on Easter-Tuesday and August 24th. A free school was founded, in 1684, by the trustees of John Brabin, Esq., with an endowment in land prodiicing £60 per annum; there is another endowment, of £4 per annum, by C. Parkinson, in 1702, in support of an usher: sixteen boys are clothed, educated, and supplied with books. Three almshouses were also founded by the same trust, for six poor women, who receive twelve shillings each monthly. Three apprentices are bound annually from a bequest by the Rev. Mr. Carlisle.
