CHIPSTEAD, a parish in the second division of the hundred of REIGATE, county of SURREY, 2f miles (N. by E.) from Gatton, containing 440 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £17. 13. 11., and in the patronage of Col. Hylton Jolliffe. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, was thoroughly repaired in 1829: on the north side is a fine Norman arch. Here is a charity school, endowed with a house and land given by Mary Stephens, in 1746, producing £70 per annum, for teaching and apprenticing six children, who are bound with premiums of from £10 to £20 each. The Croydon railway passes through this parish.
