CHOPWELL, a township in the parish of RYTON, western division of CHESTER ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 11 miles (W. S. W.) from Gateshead, containing 237 inhabitants. This township contains some coal; and at Black-hall, on the river Derwent, is a manufactory for German steel, which is stated to have been first carried on here by some emigrants from Germany. Lady Liddell supports a school for boys and another for girls.
