CLATFORD, a chapelry in the parish of PRESHUTE, hundred of SELKLEY, county of WILTS, 1 mile (W.S.W.) from Marlborough. The population is returned with the parish. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Wilts, and diocese of Salisbury, and in the patronage of the Provost and Fellows of Eton College. An Alien priory to the abbey of St. Victor in Caleto, in Normandy, was founded here by Sir Roger Mortimer, in the time of William the Conqueror, and granted by Henry VI. to Eton College. In the valley termed Clatford Bottom is a large cromlech.
