CLAXBY, a parish in the Wold division of the hundred of CALCEWORTH, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 3 miles (S.) from Alford, containing 97 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, united to the rectory of Well, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £5. 3. 1. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a small thatched building without a cemetery. A fine spring has its source from a chalk hill in the centre of the parish, and flows eastward. Here are vestiges of a Roman camp, and several tumuli covered with trees.
