CLAYDON (MIDDLE), a parish in the hundred of
ASHENDON, county of BUCKINGHAM, 4 miles (W. S. W.)
from Winslow, containing 160 inhabitants. The living
is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and
diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £15,
and in the patronage of Mrs. Verney. The church,
dedicated to All Saints, contains a monument to the
memory of Sir Edward Verney, standard-bearer to
Charles I., who was killed at the battle of Edge-Hill, in
1642. Almshouses for six poor widows were built,
in 1696, by Sir Ralph Verney, but they have no endowment.
