CLAYTON, a parish in the hundred of BUTTINGHILL, rape of LEWES, county of SUSSEX, 2 miles (S. S. E.) from Hurst-Pierrepoint, containing 453 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Keymer annexed, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £21. 0. 10., and in the patronage of the Principal and Fellows of Brasenose College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
