CLEVEDON (MILTON), a parish in the hundred of BRUTON, county of SOMERSET, 2 miles (N.W. by N.) from Bruton, containing 189 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £6. 13. 4., endowed with 200 private b,enefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Earl of Ilchester. The church is dedicated to St. James. This parish lies under the western declivity of the Burton hills, and contains limestone, with various fossils imbedded in it. There are vestiges of an ancient fortification on Small-down, which, from the circumstance of several gigantic skeletons having been found near the spot, is supposed to have been the scene of a battle.
