CLIFTON-upon-DUNSMOOR, a parish in the Rugby division of the hundred of KNIGHTLOW, county of WARWICK, 2 miles (E. N. E.) from Rugby, containing, with the hamlet of Newton with Biggin, 612 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Coventry, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £8. 1. 8., and in the patronage of the Earl of Bradford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Oxford canal passes through this parish. Thomas Carte, author of an elaborate History of England, was born here, in 1686 j he died in 1754.
