CLIFTON (GREAT), a chapelry in the parish of
WORKINGTON, ALLERDALE ward above Derwent,
county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (E.) from Workington,
containing 251 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual
curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of
Chester, endowed with £800 royal bounty, and £1000
parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rector
of Workington. The chapel is situated in the township
of Little Clifton: an additional piece of ground
was consecrated for a cemetery in 1821, the former
burial-ground having been disused from the year 1736.
Here are the remains of an ancient cross, where, according
to tradition, a market was formerly held. The
Rev. Jeremiah Seed, a theological writer, was a native
of this place; he died in 1747.
