CODNOR-CASTLE, a district (extra-parochial), in the hundred of MORLESTON-and-LITCHURCH, county of DERBY, 5 miles (S. S.E.) from Alfreton, containing, with the Park liberty, 693 inhabitants. Here was an ancient castle belonging to the noble family of Grey, styled lords Grey of Codnor, the last of whom, Henry, a philosopher and alchymist in the reign of Edward IV., obtained a license to practise the transmutation of metals. The Cromford canal passes on the east side of this district, where there are extensive iron-works, and a railway on the south communicates with the collieries in the neighbourhood.
