COMPTON-CHAMBERLAIN, a parish forming a
detached portion of the southern division of the hundred
of DAMERHAM, locally in the hundred of Cawden
and Cadworth, county of WILTS, 4 miles (W. by S.)
from Wilton, containing 267 inhabitants. The living is
a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese
of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £13, endowed
with £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty,
and in the patronage of 3. H. Penrudclock, Esq. The
church is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a charity
school. Col. Penruddock, who was executed at Exeter,
in 1655, for an attempt to restore Charles II. to the
throne, resided in this parish.
