CONGERSTON, a parish in the hundred of SPARKENHOE, county of LEICESTER, 3 miles (N.W.byW.) from Market-Bosworth, containing 149 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £5. 3. 6., and in the patronage of Earl Howe. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Charles Jennins, in 1773, left £333.6.8. in trust for teaching poor children of the parish, the annual produce of which is £16. 13. There is also a school on the National system, supported by Earl and Countess Howe, in which one hundred and fifty children are clothed and educated. The Ashby de la Zouch canal passes through this parish. Congerston is in the honour of Tutbury, duchy of Lancaster, and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of debts under 40*.
