COWLAM, a parish in the wapentake of BUCKROSE, East riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles (N. AV. by N.) from Great DrifSeld, containing 33 inhabitants-. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of the East riding, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £11. 11. 3., and in the patronage of the Rev. T. F. F. Bowes. The church contains a curious ancient font. From numerous foundations discovered here, it is probable that Cowlam was once a large town.
