DALBY-on-the-WOLDS, a parish in the eastern division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER, 6 miles (N.W. by W.) from Melton-Mowbray, containing 357 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the jurisdiction of the peculiar court of Old Dalby, and in the patronage of Lord Feversham. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. A preceptory of Knights Hospitallers was founded, it is supposed, by Robert Bossu, Earl of Leicester, in the reign of Henry II.: at the dissolution its revenue was valued at £91. 2. 8. per annum.
