DEAN-RAW, a township in the parish of WARDEN, north-western division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 8 miles (W.) from Hexham, containing 535 inhabitants. Near the confluence of the Allen and Harsingdale bourn, on the south side of the township, are the remains of an ancient building, called Staward le Peel, which Edward, Duke of York, in 1386, granted to the friars eremites of Hexham, to be held by the annual payment cf five marks.
