DIDDLEBURY, a parish in the hundred of MUNSLOW,
county of SALOP, comprising the townships of Diddlebury,
Middlehope, Peaton, and Sutton, and containing
987 inhabitants, of which number, 434 are in the
township of Diddlebury, 8 miles (N.) from Ludlow. The
living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of
Salop, and diocese of Hereford, rated in the king's books
at £12. 1. 3., and in the patronage of the Dean and
Chapter of Hereford. The church is dedicated to St.
Peter. Here was formerly an Alien priory, which, with
the patronage of the church, belonged to the abbot and
convent of Sagium, or Seez, in Normandy, and was afterwards
appropriated to the abbey of Shrewsbury.
