DINTON, a parish in the hundred of WARMINSTER, though locally in the hundred of Dunworth, county of WILTS, 5 miles (W.) from Wilton, containing 517 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £ 6, and .in the patronage of the President and Fellows of Magdalene College, Oxford. The church is dedicatto St. Mary. At Great Teffont, in this parish, is a chapel of ease. There is a place of worship for dissenters, who have assumed no particular denomination. The celebrated lawyer, statesman, and historian, Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendpn, was born here in 1608.
