DUNKESWELL, a parish in the hundred of HEMYOCK, county of DEVON, 5 miles (N. by W.) from Honiton, containing 441 inhabitants. The living is a donative, endowed with £400 private benefaction, and £4 00 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Miss Graves. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Dunkeswell, which anciently belonged to a Jew named Amadio, was purchased by William Briwere, who founded, in 1201, an abbey for White monks, to the honour of the Virgin Mary; the annual revenue of which, at the dissolution, was estimated at £298. 11.10.
