ELLA (KIRK), a parish in the county of the town of KINGSTON-upon-HULL, locally in the East riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Kirk- Ella and West Ella, and a portion of the townships of Anlaby and "Willerby, and containing, with the whole of Anlaby, which is partly in the parish of Hessle, 875 inhabitants, of which number, 246 are in the township of Kirk-Ella, 5 miles (W. by N.) from Kingston upon Hull, and 122 in the adjoining township of West Ella. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £13.2. 85. N. Sykes, Esq. was patron in 1813. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a very ancient structure. Some of the merchants of Hull have elegant residences here. A school-room, with a house for the master, has been erected.
