ELMTON, a parish in the hundred of SCARSDALE, county of DERBY, 9 miles (E. byN.) from Chesterfield, containing 352 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Derby, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £5. 1. 3., endowed with £200 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £300 parliamentary grant, and .in the patronage of the Rev. C. H. R. Rhodes. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. Limestone abounds in the parish. The extraordinary arithmetical calculator, Jedediah Buxton, was born at this place in 1707; he died in 1772, and was buried here.
