ENNERDALE, a chapelry (parochial) in that part of the parish of ST-BEES which is in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 5 miles (N. E.) from Egremont, containing 209 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £ 1000 royal bounty, and £ 1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of H. C. Curwen,Esq. The chapel is a small neat edifice, which was repaired in 1786, and in 1825 the thorn hedge which enclosed the burial-ground, was removed, and a stone wall built in its stead. A school-room has been built by subscription among the inhabitants. On the second Tuesday in September a sheep fair is hejd in the village. The Earl of Lonsdale, as lord of the manor, holds a court here at Michaelmas.
