county of SOUTHAMPTON, 5 miles (W. by S.) from
Winchester, containing, with Slackstead, 201 inhabitants.
The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry,
and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at
£10. 12. 1., and in the patronage of Paulet St. John
Mildmay, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. John.
On an eminence, termed Beacon hill, are vestiges of an
ancient encampment.
