FARNWORTH, a chapelry in the parish of DEAN, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 2 miles (S. S. E.) from Great Bolton, containing 2044 inhabitants. The chapel, a handsome structure, has been recently erected by the Commissioners appointed under the act for building additional churches, at an expense of £8000, There is a place of worship for Independents. In this township are extensive coal and vitriol works, spinning and power-loom mills, and one of the best paper manufactories in the kingdom. A schoolhouse, erected on land given by James Roscoe, in 1715, was endowed, in 1728, with £300 by Nathan Doming, The commissioners of enclosures, in 1798, allotted cer-. tain land to the trustees of this school, and in 1825 the school-room was rebuilt; there is also a house and garden for the master. An infant school, and a school for the children of Wesleyan Methodists, are supported by subscription.
