FAWLEY, a parish in the hundred of DESBOROUGH, county of BUCKINGHAM, 3 miles (N. by W.) from Henley upon Thames, containing 276 inhabitants. Theliving is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £11. 10. lO.j and in the patronage of-Freeman, Esq. The church; dedicated to St. Mary, was repaired and fitted up. in 1748, at the expense of John Freeman, Esq; the altar font, pulpit, and pews, belonged to the chapel at Canons, the seat of the Duke of Chandos, which had been pulled down the year preceding. Fawley-court was garrisoned by the king's troops in 1642, whereby many valuable manuscripts, books, &c., the property of its celebrated owner, Sir Bulstrode Whitlock, were destroyed.
