FERRY-BRIDGE, a hamlet in the parish of FERRYFRYSTONE, upper division of the wapentake of OSGOLDCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 21 miles (S.S.W.) from York. The population is returned with the parish. This place derives its importance from its situation on the great north road; there are some excellent inns, and the houses are in general well built: a handsome stone bridge here crosses the river Aire. The possession of this pass was warmly contested by the rival armies of York and Lancaster, since which period numerous skeletons, pieces of armour, and other military relics, have been often found in the neighbourhood. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists.
