GAYTON, a parish in the Lynn division of the
hundred of FREEBRIDGE, county of NORFOLK, 7 miles
(E.) from Lynn-Regis, containing 545 inhabitants.
The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry
and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at
£8. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Norwich.
The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Here
is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. William
de Scohies founded a Benedictine priory here in the reign
of William the Conqueror.
