GEDNEY, a parish in the wapentake of ELLOE, parts of HOLLAND, county of LINCOLN, 3 miles (E.) from Holbeach, containing, with the chapelry of Gedney-Hill, 1786 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £30. 11. 10., and in the patronage of the Crown. There is also a sinecure rectory, rated at £23. 11. 0., and in the patronage of the Crown for two terms, and of W. Clayton, Esq. for one. The church, dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, is a beautiful structure, supposed to have been built by the abbots of Crowland, who had a house and large posses sions in the parish: it contains fifty-three windows, those of the north aisle having considerable remains of painted glass. In this parish are vestiges of intrenchments, supposed to have been the site of Roman fortifications.
