GRAVELEY, a parish in the hundred of BROADWATER, county of HERTFORD, 2 miles (N.) from Stevenage, containing 316 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with which that of Chivesfield is consolidated, in the archdeaconry of Huntingdon, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £ 12. 0. 10V and in the patronage of the Rev. Thomas Fordham Green. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has a square embattled tower at the west end, surmounted by a spire covered with lead. There are ruins of Chivesfield church still remaining. The old Roman road from Verulam to Chesterfield passes through the parish.
