GREYSTEAD, or GAYSTEAD, a parish in the north-western division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 5 miles (W. by N.) from Bellingham, comprising the townships of Chirdon and Smalesmouth, and containing 246 inhabitants. The living is a rectory not in charge, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland,, and diocese of Durham, and in the patronage of the Governors of Greenwich Hospital. This parish formed part of the late extensive parish of Simonburn, which was divided in 1811, by act of parliament, into six-distinct parishes. The church was consecrated in 1818. The North Tyne river runs through the parish.
