HAMPTON (HIGH), a parish in the hundred of BLACK-TORRINGTON, county of DEVON, 3 miles (w. from Hatherleigh, containing 282 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £8. 19. 4. J. M. Woolcombe, Esq. was patroa in 1810. The church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, has a plain Norman door: it is situated on a very high hill, and serves as a land-mark for the surrounding country. Here is a small charity school.
