HARNHAM, a township in that part of the parish of BOLAM which is in the north-eastern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 12 miles (W.S.W.) from Morpeth, containing 61 inhabitants. Harnham, the site of an ancient fort, has been a place of great strength; it is situated on the brow of a precipiceformed of rag-stone, having vast rocks on one side, and a morass on the other; the entrance, which is through a narrow defile to the northward, was formerly defended by an iron gate.
