HARTWELL, a parish in the hundred of AYLESBURY, county of BUCKINGHAM, 2 miles (W.S.W.) from Aylesbury, containing 133 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Little Hampden, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £14. 5. 5. Sir G. Lee, Bart, was patron in 1803. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, was erected by the late Sir William Lee, Bart., in imitation of the early style of English architecture, with two octagonal towers, and a roof highly decorated with tracery. This was the residence of Louis XVIII. and his court during the stay of that monarch in England, prior to his restoration to the French throne.
