HAWNBY, a parish in the wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising, the townships of Arden with Ardenside, Bilsdale-Westside, Dale-Town, and Hawnby, and containing 620 inhabitants, of which number, 286 are in the township of Hawnby, 6 miles (N.W.) from Helmsley. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £7. 18. 6. Lord George Cavendish was patron in 1823. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists.
