HENSINGHAM, a chapelry in the parish of ST-BEES, ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 1 mile (S. E.) from Whitehaven, containing 860 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in ihe archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, and in the patronage of the Earl of Lonsdale. The village, occupying an elevated site, commands an interesting view of the town and harbour of Whitehaven: there are some neat villas in the neighbourhood. A school is supported by subscription. There is a manufactory for thread and check; and at Overend a large quantity of limestone is obtained and burnt. Archbishop Grindal was born here in 1519, and died in 1583.
