HOLYBOURNE, a parish in the hundred of ALTON, Alton (North) division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 1 mile (N. B.) from Alton, containing 482 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester. The church is dedicated to the Holy Rood. Thomas Andrews, in 1719, devised estates for the erection and support of a free school for all the children of the parish, for twelve of Alton, five of Binsted, and three of Froyle, and for apprenticing them; the net annual income is nearly £200, and the number receiving instruction is about eighty, of whom twenty are clothed.
