HORSFORTH, a chapelry in the parish of GUISLEY, upper division of the wapentake of SKYRACK, West riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles (N. W. by W.) from Leeds, containing 2824 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, endowed with £200 private benefaction, £600 royal bounty, and £1400 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Guisley. A chapel was erected on the site of the ancient structure, in 1758, chiefly by the Stanhope family. There are places of worship for Baptists and Wegleyan Methodists. In 1819 a bridge was built over the Aire, at an expense of £ 1500, by John Pollard, Esq. Special sessions are held here once a fortnight. The manufacture of clothv is carried on to a considerable extent in this chapelry, and there are some bleaching-mills.
