HORTON, a parish in the eastern division of CASTLE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of Bebside, Cowpen>.East Hartford, West Hartford, and Horton, and containing 2099 inhabitants, of which number, 139 are in the township of Horton, 7 miles (S. E.) from Morpeth. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Woodhorn. The church was rebuilt in 1828, at an expense of upwards of £500, raised by subscription. Horton formed part of the parish of Woodhorn until the year 1768, when it was severed from it. There are mines of coal in the parish. Here was formerly a strong castle belonging to the Delaval family, which was razed to the ground in 1809, and the intrenchments levelled. This parish is bounded on the north by the river Blyth.
