HOYE, a parish in the hundred of PRESTON, rape of LEWES, county of SUSSEX, 2 miles (W. by N.) from Brighton, containing 312 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage not in charge, with that of Preston, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester; The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is in the early style of English architecture. This was a considerable village for a long time subsequently to the Norman, Conquest, but is now almost swallowed up by the encroachments of the sea.
