HOXNE, a parish in the hundred of HOXNE, county of SUFFOLK, 3 miles (N. E.) from Eye, containing 1066 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Denham, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of. Norwich, rated in the king's books at £ 12. 3. 6. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. A free school was founded and endowed by Lord Maynard, in 176!; the premises consist of schoolrooms and residences for the master and the mistress; about forty boys and twenty girls are instructed, and some of the children are occasionally apprenticed: the master's salary is £42 per annum, and that of the mistress £12. Here was a priory of Benedictine monks, subordinate to that at Norwich, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was valued at £18.10. per annum.
