HUTTON (OLD), a chapelry in that part of the parish of KENDAL which is in KENDAL ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 2 miles (S.) from Burt6n in Kendzil;containing, with the hamlet of Holmescales, 424 inhabitants. ~ The living is a perpetual curacy, in-thearchdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Kendal. The "chapel/dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built in 1628, and rebuilt in 1699. A school was built by Edward-Milner, who in 1613 gave land towards the support of a schoolmaster: the income is £19. 11. per annum, and twenty children are educated; the school was rebuilt by the inhabitants and others in 1753, and in 1757 a parochial library was established in it.
