ILFORD (GREAT), a chapelry in the parish of BARKING, hundred of BECONTREE, county of ESSEX, 8 miles (N. E. byE.) from London, containing 2972 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, endowed with £200 private benefaction, £600 royal bounty, and £800 parliamentary grant. James H. Leigh, Esq. was patron in 1815. A new chapel is about to be erected by the parliamentary commissioners. There are places of worship for Baptists and Wesleyan Methodists. The petty sessions for the division are held here every Saturday. In the reign of Stephen, the abbess of Barking founded an hospital at Ilford for thirteen lepers; the present buildings are appropriated to the use of six poor persons, and comprise an ancient chapel.
