JOHN, or CASTLERIGG (ST.), a chapelry, joint with Wythburn, in that part of the parish of CROSTHWAITE which is in ALLERDALE ward below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 4 miles (E.S. E.) from Keswick, containing 566 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £1200 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Crosthwaite. Here is a small rent-charge for the instruction of poor children.
